I had so many blog posts lined up in my head—what I was going to talk about, the jokes, the exact phrasing I’d use. Ever since I gave birth, there was this incredible creative flow washing over me. It was almost as if my womb had stayed open and I was just continuing to give birth to things. Inspiration was absolutely everywhere.
And then, all of a sudden, that state just ended. The only thing that changed was the return of my period.
I think this boils down to two scientific reasons and one spiritual one. If you’re anything like me, we’re about to have a little epiphany together here.
The Science: “Everyday Creativity” and Time Crunches
Biologically speaking, during pregnancy and the postpartum period, we go through phases that sharpen our protective and caregiving instincts. This triggers a state known as everyday creativity, which completely bypasses those moments of self-doubt and indecision in the tiny pockets of free time we actually get.
“Everyday creativity” is basically our brain calibrating itself to find creative solutions to the constant mini-crises we face throughout the day. Because I constantly had tabs open in the back of my mind—like how to express what I’m feeling, how to grow my Instagram account, or how to make a side income—I think my brain was naturally churning out creative fixes for them.
On top of that, the constant time crunch of nonstop caregiving meant I had to use my time as efficiently as possible. I literally didn’t have the luxury of self-doubt, hesitation or laziness. If I thought, “Let me sleep on this idea and look at it tomorrow,” the risk of never getting back to that project because of how busy I am was too high. That reality forced me to immediately bring whatever popped into my head to life in the most effective way.
The Spiritual: The Womb as a Portal
As for the spiritual explanation: our womb is a divine portal. Thanks to my womb, my daughter’s soul crossed over into this world and took physical form. This divine portal doesn’t just slam shut the moment of birth; it slowly and gently transitions back to its normal state. And during that window, for an aware mind, tapping into the inspiration you need becomes effortless.
Finding the Words Again
But now? Every time I sit down at the keyboard, it’s like the words just fly away right as I’m about to type them. So, I decided to unpack this very feeling just to get myself writing again.
Because the tiny bit of time and solo space I get is way too precious to waste mindlessly scrolling on my phone. And even if the inspiration coming to me right now feels like an empty email, at least the notification for it just popped up in my brain.
